The Intercultural Youth Music and Dance Festival 2018
On Saturday April 28th at Riverdale High School in Pierrefonds the Youth Stars Foundation will be hosting the first annual Intercultural Youth Music and Dance Festival. The festival will focus on intercultural exchanges and providing accessibility for youth of all communities who cannot afford to participate in traditional festivals due to overwhelming registration fees. The festival will be a family event open to the public and geared towards youth between the ages of 6 and 20.
The festival’s main goal is to promote intercultural exchange through music and dance workshops, panel discussions and a showcase.
Workshops – active engagement in a tangible form of culture, practicing the dances and interacting with peers.
Panel discussion – education about interculturalism – deconstructing issues surrounding interculturalism, topics ranging from:
- Cultural appropriation VS appreciation and experiencing dance culture
- Media influences
- Racial stereotypes and prejudice in Québec
- Origins of dance styles
- The advantageous of interculturalism vs. multiculturalism
Showcase – Sharing of one’s own roots and heritage, and uniting the diversity of the population.
- Finally, the youth will have the opportunity to showcase their own dance choreography and music performances to celebrate and showcase interculturalism!
